Crikey, I need a bit of a hand here

Don’t worry, there are people who can help

Who is behind this site?

need2know.org.nz is brought to you by New Zealand's largest general insurer, IAG New Zealand Limited (the owner of the State, NZI, Lumley and Lantern Insurance brands and underwriter for most of the home insurance offered by BNZ and the Co-operative Bank, and many New Zealand insurance brokers) and by AMI.

For convenience, all references to 'IAG' on this website mean IAG business divisions operating in New Zealand and the terms 'underwritten by IAG' and 'IAG-underwritten' mean underwritten by IAG or its associated company AMI (where applicable).

Why is this site here?

In 2013, changes to home insurance were required to meet the needs of international reinsurers. These affected many New Zealand home insurers.

Many New Zealand home insurers moved to a Sum Insured model to meet the reinsurers' requirements. IAG believed that having customers estimate what it could cost to rebuild their home – and then insuring it for that amount – provided homeowners with a good solution to the requirement to set a Sum Insured for their home.

Those changes to home insurance meant that home insurance decisions became even more important, and homeowners needed to understand more complex details about their home and their insurance policy to be able to make informed decisions.

To help you understand changes to IAG-underwritten home insurance, IAG developed this site and its resources.

What you'll find here

Under a 'replacement' Sum Insured home insurance policy, it's a good idea to check if the amount your home is insured for reflects the likely cost of rebuilding it, in case the worst should happen, as this is the most that the insurer will pay. This site provides information that can help you make that decision, and offers you information about where to go for more support.
